Happy Monday, friends. Not sure why we say that, really, since most folks I know aren’t all that jacked about Mondays. Me included. But hey, maybe it helps the motivation pick up a little speed, who knows. Positive thinking is always a good thing, right?

So, April 2017. Which means I have survived the release of my second novel, The Memory of You, through Harper Collins Christian Publishing. Whew. What a ride. Can I just say again that a few years ago you could have knocked me over with that proverbial feather if you’d told me I’d actually be published by one of the Big 5.

But here we are, with the books and the smile on my face to prove it. I won’t bore you with a photo of my smiling face, because it’s at this point in a book’s release that I get a little tired of looking at myself and reading about myself and hearing myself . . . not saying you will, I hope you don’t, because that wouldn’t sell me any books, would it, but I need a little breather from the buzz. But here’s the first bookstore sighting, taken over the weekend by my son in Boston!

17506298_10158413629885207_469800379_n

Here’s what I want to talk about today –

Full disclosure.

Interesting term, don’t you think? I like it. It says to me, hey, I’m telling you this because I want to be honest with you. I want you to know the truth.

I had an interesting thing happen last week. I got this email. From a reader who’d picked up my novel, The Things We Knew. And she was kinda annoyed. Because she didn’t know it was a “Christian” novel. Didn’t know there would be references to God and Jesus and maybe even the Bible on occasion. And she. Was. Not. Happy.

Okay, so I got over the email. I have to admit, full disclosure and all, those things sting. Nasty reviews are one thing, you know, the hold nothing back I’m coming at you with a pitchfork kind – yeah those little suckers sting too. But for the most part, I think there’s a little cuckoo crazy in those reviewers that’s not too hard to pick up on. But when a reader goes out of their way to send an email, a rather lengthly detailed description of all the things they hated about the book . . . suck town.

I know, I know. Don’t take it personally. It’s not about me, it’s about them. I’ve taken all the advice from my fellow author friends and agent to heart. Advice from my kids was appreciated as well, but probably not the best way to respond . . . though I loved them for it. 🙂 And no, I didn’t reply to this person, because sometimes there is no need for a personal response to that kind of emotional attack. Because here’s the thing.

With each book I write, I pray for the words, and I pray that once those words are out in the world, God takes them where they need to go. So I believe that particular pissed off reader had my book for a reason. I don’t need to know the rest of the story. But something in that email got me a little twitchy, so I want to tell you what it was.

Full disclosure.

This reader accused me of not being honest about my faith. She was ‘deceived’ she said, because she hadn’t intended to buy a book that delved into spiritual matters. Or specifically, those of a Christian leaning. Okay, fair enough.

I could point out that my books are currently listed on Amazon under the Women’s Fiction – Christian, and Fiction -Religious and Inspirational, categories. I could also point out the name of my publisher is Harper Collins Christian Publishing. But I also know that my books are cross-marketed to reach not only readers in the Christian market, but those in the general market as well. I know that right now my books are sitting on the Fiction/Literature shelf in Barnes & Noble in Boston. And I’m not going to apologize for that. It’s one of the many things I love about my publisher.

I don’t have to compromise.

I am a Christian and I write from a Christian worldview. Which means that at some point in any one of my books, you will encounter some brush with faith, be it through a believing character or as subtle as the dawn rising over the tree tops after death. I infuse my beliefs into my writing because it’s who I am. And I don’t believe those stories would be the same without that.

Some of my characters have a strong faith. Some have very little. Some have major doubts. Some have no faith at all. Bet you know a few of all of those kinda folk, don’t you? So yes, you will find faith in my stories. You will also find hope. Mercy. Grace. Forgiveness. All those necessary but hardest thing we’ve ever done things . . . all the stuff of life. That’s what I write about. The ugly, the messy, the crazy, the unconscionable. Because come alongside that with some truth and love and opportunity for healing . . . and I think you’ve got yourself the makings of a truly good book. Life is hard. Life changes us. For better or for worse.

And reading about the hard stuff, that’s not for everybody. I get that. I appreciate that. If you decide my books aren’t for you, well, that’s your choice and I respect it. But I don’t ever want to be accused of trying to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes. Trying to peddle a product disguised as something they don’t really want.

I’m not whomping anyone over the head with bible verses or profusely praying characters. I’m not saying you have to believe the same things I do or identify with any of my characters. I’m just telling you what you might encounter. In the spirit of full disclosure. You will find God in the midst of every book that has my name on it. You may not even know it, but He’s there. Because the stories all come from Him first, the greatest Author of all.

Just wanted you to know.

WOO!! Here we go! I had so much fun talking with Carried Schmidt. We’re kind of new friends, we met online last year after she reviewed The Things We Knew and she was so amazingly gracious – we started chatting and got to know each other, and here we are, and OH yes, we got to meet in person this past summer in Nashville!!

if you don’t know Carrie, you’re going to love her, trust me. And you have to check out her blog right away for all the latest about our favorite subject – BOOKS!! Reading Is My Superpower is a great resource for readers and authors alike! Due to technical glitches, I’ve had to split our chat into a few sections, but I hope you enjoy getting to know Carrie today!

And here I thought Carrie had been blogging for years! She’s so good at it! And you guys, wait until you hear how many books this woman reads in a year!! But that’s coming up. Now we’re going to find out a little more about the kinds of books Carrie loves the most, and I’m going to ask her a tough question. 🙂

Well that was too much fun! Don’t forget, readers, go check out the Christian Fiction Readers Retreat website, and sign up for this year’s retreat!!

Okay, let’s see, what else can we talk about? Oh, I know, how about more books? Or we could just . . . chat.

OH!! Our connection cut out again!! The suspense is killing me! What’s your favorite book, Carrie??!!

Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely looking forward to talking to Carrie again! (Will you come back, Carrie, or did I scare you away forever?!)

If you have any questions for us about books, writing or our amazing pooches, please leave a comment and keep the conversation going!

Thanks for participating in my very first Friday Fun Chat, Carrie, and thanks to all of YOU for watching!!

So let’s see, anyone out there beat Carrie’s record for books read in a year?

Oh my gosh. I was all set to post a really cute video update with all the news, but then I realized I look like a character from The Walking Dead right now, so that’s not going to happen. Your eyes will thank me. 🙂 Here’s a picture of our lake instead.

IMG_2145 IMG_2193

We’ve returned from our annual pilgrimage to Canada, which was fantastic as usual, although far too short. I was working on edits for The Memory of You for part of the time, so I spent a lot of time sitting out here, with my new laptop. 🙂

IMG_2207

And now those edits are done and off, and I’m getting ready to leave for the ACFW Conference in Nashville next week!! Can’t wait!! Maybe I’ll see you there. Meantime, there are some things going on with The Things We Knew that I’d love to share!

logo

The LITFUSE Blog Tour is underway! I love the gang at Litfuse, they are always so enthusiastic and do such a great job promoting their authors! I’m thankful for all the readers as well who get on board and help spread the word about good books! So check it out, the links will take you to my landing page, where you can read Buzz and Reviews for The Things We Knew as they come in! Feel free to help spread the word.

Also going on THIS WEEK is a fun PINTEREST contest!! If you don’t already know about it, here’s the scoop –

Contest!!

All you have to do is create a smashingly good Pinterest Board for The Things We Knew, (you’ve read it, right?!) and send me the link via DM or post on my Facebook Author Page! Contest will close at midnight Monday August 22nd, and we’ll announce the winners on Tuesday, probably in the evening, as I’m flying to Nashville that day! First prize winner will receive this amazing beach tumbler, bookmark, and a signed copy of The Things We Knew, and there will be first and second runner up prizes too, so you’ll want to get in on the fun! (You can view MY BOARD here!) And I don’t mind telling you I have yet to find anyone that looks remotely like the way I picture Evy MacIntrye, (Evy like the Chevy!), so if anyone can find her, extra points!!

And a HUGE THANKS to all of you who have read and reviewed the book already! I really appreciate you taking the time to put up a review, and it really goes a long way in helping get the word out to new readers.

Okay so these tumblers are pretty amazing! I’ve been using mine all week! I might be a little obsessed with it. 😮

IMG_2228

Well, I can’t believe the end of summer is here. I’m praying for all you Moms & Dads as kids go back to school or off to college. Time goes too quickly! I hope you’ve all had a good summer and have had amazing family times together. I’d love to hear about it!

Until Next time!

Peace to you and yours. 🙂

Owning It – A Few Thoughts From The Front Lines

It’s been a crazy few weeks. But this is my current location. And I’m trying to relax.

13934868_10153609906075899_5093038199398117099_n

Trying being the operative word.

All the excitement and anticipation leading up to the release of The Things We Knew, has simmered down. Now it’s out there, and I’m busy with promoting and working on other projects and doing life, all the while trying to stay sane. Because although it isn’t my first book release, it kind of feels that way.

I think maybe, to me at least, this one matters more. Maybe it’s because it took so many years to get published. Maybe it’s because we worked on it for such a long time. Maybe it’s because I’m so grateful for the people who were willing to invest their time, effort and a bit of their heart to push this baby toward publication. And dang if we didn’t do it.

Funny thing is, I thought that was the hard part. Getting to this.

IMG_2141

But what do I know? Not much, apparently. Because the hard part? That’s only just beginning. The hard part is letting your baby go out into the world and being completely unprepared for the reception it will get. Completely unprepared for the critics. Okay, not completely unprepared. But perhaps a little blindsided.

I haven’t been here before in quite this way. More people have access to this book than any of my previous ones. It’s in actual bookstores – freaking Barnes & Noble for crying out loud – and if that doesn’t make this whole whacked and wild dream real, I don’t know what does. It’s different this time because there’s advertising and reviews that kind of matter and my book is probably popping up more places than I know about. It’s different this time because now?

Now I really need to know who I am as an author and what that means for the books I write.

Now I need to own this.

As people are discovering who I am and what I write, I’m learning to live with the fact that not everyone will like me.

Ouch.

Okay, so there it is. Yes, I’ve been reading the reviews. No, it’s probably not a smart thing to do. But I was always the kid who crept a little closer to the flame when nobody was looking and stuck my finger out anyway, just to see if it really would burn. Not much has changed. Flames still burn.

But here’s the thing. This is my book. My story. My heart. And I’ve offered it not for the glory, not for the fun of seeing my name on the cover, not for any fame or fortune (cue raucous laughter), I’ve offered it because I feel like I have something to say. Like maybe I can offer a hurting world a little hope.

It sounds so simple. But that’s the truth. That’s why I write. That’s why I long to share my stories. And yes, that makes me vulnerable. Because it’s not easy putting yourself out there. Sharing your heart. Actually, it’s probably one of the hardest things in the world.

And honestly? This journey cost me. Emotionally. Spiritually. Physically even, because it’s easy to get stressed and overwhelmed and not take time to treat yourself well. But was all that worth it? Absolutely. This is my victory. My reward.

I need to own that.

I need to stop cringing when I read words that try to tear down and belittle. People are not kind, but I knew that. It shouldn’t surprise me. I need to stop apologizing in my head and feeling bad when I hear that what I’ve offered wasn’t what a particular reader expected or wanted. I need to realize that I’m never ever going to please everybody.

I need to own who I am and what I write and not worry about how it is received.

This is my lesson, and maybe it’s been slow in coming, but I better get it down now or I’m not going to survive this game.

Yes, I am a Christian. I write for a Christian publisher. But I’m not your pastor. Not your Bible or your Sunday School.

I am a broken person put together by grace and mercy and forgiveness and I write about broken people in need of grace and mercy and forgiveness.

If you want to chew on Scripture and platitudes and everybody gets saved at the end stories, then I’m probably not the author for you. And that’s fine.

God is big enough for all of us in all our brokenness.

Grace come quiet, simply, unobtrusively. It comes when we need it most. When we least expect it. When we don’t deserve it. And sometimes when we don’t even know we need it. But there it is.

If you want to find a little faith – that quiet steadfast heartbeat of the only one thing in this crazy world that will carry you through – I believe it is there in the pages of the books I write. Because that’s how they were written. By faith. Through struggles and doubts, carried on the wind of grace. God is very much present in every word I write. How could He not be?

Maybe that message of hope and healing might look a little different to you and yeah, you might not like it that way.

That’s okay.

I’m not going to please everybody.

I don’t need to.

Today, I make my peace with this.

My words are written for a higher purpose. And I will continue to write them in the way I feel led, without worrying about rejection or craving acceptance or seeking any glory that really doesn’t belong to me anyway.

I will write for the sheer joy of knowing that I can. Knowing that this is my gift and it pleases Him. And that truth? That’s all that matters in the end.

And today,  I will own that.

I’m thrilled to hosting author Lori Benton! I’m a big fan of Lori’s writing and if you haven’t discovered her yet, she writes amazing historical fiction! Her latest book, A Flight of Arrows, Book #2 in The Pathfinder Series, sounds wonderful and I can’t wait to read it.

Hearts are Divided
Loyalties Will Be Tested
The Fates of Two Families Hang in the Balance

Twenty years past, in 1757, a young Redcoat, Reginald Aubrey stole a newborn boy—the lighter-skinned of Oneida twins— during the devastating fall of Fort William Henry and raised him as his own.

No one connected to Reginald escaped unscathed from this crime. Not his adopted daughter Anna. Not Stone Thrower, the Native American father determined to get his son back. Not Two Hawks, William’s twin brother separated since birth, living in the shadow of his absence and hoping to build a future with Anna. Nor Lydia, who longs for Reginald to be free from his self-imposed emotional prison and embrace God’s forgiveness— and her love.

Now William, whose identity has been shattered after discovering the truth of his birth, hides in the ranks of an increasingly aggressive British army. The Redcoats prepare to attack frontier New York and the Continentals, aided by Oneida warriors including Two Hawks, rally to defend it. As the Revolutionary War penetrates the Mohawk Valley, two families separated by culture, united by love and faith, must find a way to reclaim the son marching toward them in the ranks of their enemies.

Lori is here today to talk about 18th Century World Building!

(Photo cred: Harvey Barrison, Wikimedia commons).

ScavengerHunt_photo_menhorseback18th Century World Building World building—it’s a term most often associated with fantasy writers, those who create story settings like Narnia or Middle Earth, complete with people groups and their histories, legends, songs, and languages. But readers may have noticed that I’m doing something similar with my historical novels. I’m telling stories lifted from the same fictional 18th century world—one that exists in my crowded, character-teeming brain—so there’s every chance that a character or two from one book will, at some future date, wander into the pages of another book. That’s my intention with every novel I write.

I actually do this more than my four published novels (to date) might indicate, but occasionally those scenes featuring familiar characters from previous books are cut during the editing process. As a matter of fact, I’d worked more characters readers of Burning Sky would have recognized into A Flight of Arrows, my latest release, than presently inhabit the final pages. Alas, those characters didn’t play a significant enough role in the story to warrant inclusion in the final version of a novel already jam-packed with characters. But they’re still part of the story in my mind and you can find that deleted scene on my website.

For those interested in how these story worlds set on the 18th century frontier intersect, I’ve begun a Crossover Character List. It’s short for now but—God willing—it will grow!

Crossover Characters

ScavengerHunt_photo_womensewingJoseph Tames-His-Horse (Mohawk warrior): first appeared in Burning Sky. Has a small role in The Wood’s Edge, a bigger role in A Flight of Arrows. Daniel Clear-Day (Oneida warrior/elder): first appeared in a small role in Burning Sky, plays a much larger role in The Wood’s Edge and A Flight of Arrows.

Characters from my published books I know more about (and might someday get to share): The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn: Cade, Jesse Bird, Ambrose Kincaid, Blackbird, Thunder-Going-Away, Charlie Spencer, Seth Trimble, Bethany Allard

Burning Sky: Neil MacGregor, Willa Obenchain, Matthew/Owl, Maggie/Pine Bird, Joseph Tames-His-Horse The Pathfinders series: pretty much everyone!

Well, we’ll look forward to it, Lori!

LORI_1(0662)--WEBSIZE_MP

Lori Benton was raised east of the Appalachian Mountains, where she was surrounded by three hundred years of American history and now her novels transport readers to the eighteenth century, where she brings to life the Colonial and early Federal periods of our nation’s history. She is the multiple award-winning author of numerous books including Burning Sky, The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn, and both books in The Pathfinders series (The Wood’s Edge and A Flight of Arrows). Connect with her on her website LoriBenton.blogspot.com or on Facebook (Author Lori Benton).

Here’s the Stop #11 Skinny:

You can order Lori’s book on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, CBD , Waterbrook, or at your local bookstore!

Clue to Write Down: surface

Link to Stop #12, the Next Stop on the Loop: Lori Benton’s own site!

But wait! Before you go, I’m offering one book, winner’s choice, in e-format or paperback – Yesterday’s Tomorrow, Hidden in the Heart or Bridge of Faith. All you have to do is sign up to get my e-newsletter or note that you’re already a subscriber and like my Author Page on Facebook! You can read about the books on my Amazon Author page and decide which you’d like!

More Coffee … Need

Yeah, okay. But it’s Monday morning and I just spent two hours working on changing up this blog, and five minutes ago I sat staring at this screen in full out panic mode, thinking I’d just deleted the ENTIRE THING!!

So I need more coffee.

51jVh8cSV8L._SY355_

Because this is pretty much me in the morning. And, not gonna lie, sometimes in the afternoon. I’m lovely. Really.

Okay, so here’s my new digs, like it? I’m still fiddling, but honest to Pete, I have no idea what I’m doing. Like I said, I thought I almost deleted the whole thing and that was fun. But anyhow, here we are. Just the three of us.

Yeah, blogging. Still wrestling with that one too. But, if the new title of my blog gives you any clue, here’s what I’ve decided – the words matter.

They do. Your words. My words. They matter. Because life is crazy. And far too short. I don’t want to miss a thing. So I write. And I read. And there is hope to be found in the words. I really do believe that.

So here we are, 2016. Wow. I’d be more excited, but I need that second cup of coffee. No, seriously, I’m really excited about this year.

Because, this.

ThingsWeKnew

Yep. This has been a long time coming.  THANK YOU THOMAS NELSON, I LOVE YOU GUYS!!! Truly, it’s been a blast working on this book so far, and I cannot wait until it’s out in the world!

Okay, so it’s still a long time coming. July 12, actually. 182 days. Not that I’m counting. 🙂 Yes, I’m counting. I’m allowed. 🙂

Well, you can click on that baby to find out more, and you know . . . pre-order if you want. No pressure. Ahem. You can also find out more about my other books under the very conveniently titled header, BOOKS.

So that’s what’s up for this year. I’m hoping to connect here on the blog more often (Mmm I think I say that a lot). I’m sure there’ll be lots of fun things to come as we get closer to Release Day . . . meanwhile, I’m busy on edits, and my next book after this one, (yes, already. You have no idea . . .), and generally doing life without losing the JOY. Which I said was my word for the year. Mine and apparently the entire population of Texas’ – but no worries. Joy is good. Joy works.

View More: http://sarahe.pass.us/photographs-for-print

Yes, there I am. Being joyful.

So today, since it’s another stormy day, I’ll probably sit around and drink coffee and slash some more words out of this next book . . . I know, you feel that pain. I’ll come up with a more meaningful blog next time.

Meanwhile, drop me a note here. How’re you doing so far this year? What’s on your calendar and what are you excited about?

‘Till next time …
